The most popular 90s Fashion Trends

It is clearly evident that the 90s was a very memorable and iconic era for fashion, and many of the trends that were prominent during the 90s are still highly valued by fashionistas today. The 90s are coming back: and in this issue of Style Insider we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to explore some of the key 90s trends.

We thought that it would only be fair to start with perhaps one of the most loved trends of the era: crop tops. You’re probably thinking, aren’t crop tops a more recent trend? Well crop tops actually started to become popular during the 90s, and they are such a stylish wardrobe staple that they are still worn repeatedly by a variety of different people today. The reason why crop tops are so popular is that they are extremely versatile: they are available in so many different patterns and colours and they can be styled with high waisted jeans, a skater skirt or even some denim shorts during the summer. Crop tops and belly shirts were staples of the era. Pop sensations like Britney Spears, Destiny's Child, and Christina Aguilera rocked them on stage and the red carpet, while the rest of society settled with feeling extremely cool wearing them to high school discos.

The next 90s fashion trend that we felt just had to be mentioned is an extremely popular accessory: the choker. Wearing a choker during the 90s was the easiest way to show people that you were edgy. Chokers were a must-have accessory in the '90s because they could make any outfit look instantly cool. Alongside the choker comes scrunchies: any colour, any size, they were worn during the 90s! Sure, Carrie Bradshaw bashed the scrunchie on "Sex and the City," but that was well after the colourful hair elastic had its heyday. But maybe Carrie got it wrong — scrunchies can be useful, cute, and gentle on hair. Plus, '90s icons Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen seemed to love them.

Hair accessories were majorly popular during the 90s, however one piece that stands out particularly is the butterfly hair clip. In the '90s, pretty much everyone wore butterfly clips in their hair. The more clips you wore, the cooler you looked. For instance, Danielle Fishel from "Boy Meets World" attended the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards with tons of butterfly clips in her hair. Despite this, Danielle Fishel wasn't the only one who came with the embellished hairdo... funnily enough, Kirsten Dunst, Hilary Duff, and Gwen Stefani were also massive fans of these colourful staples.

Many variations of denim were worn continuously in the 90s era, and one of the most iconic style of jeans were mom jeans. Before the low-rise jeans of early 2000s fame, high-waisted jeans were huge in the '90s. Mom jeans, which are high-waisted, light wash jeans, were an especially popular look. Mom jeans are now making a come back, and this just shows how 90s fashion is well and truly still alive. Many style icons during the 90s chose to pair their mom jeans with another staple: Dr Marten boots, in order to create a more edgy look. Dr. Marten boots were a punk staple during the era. The lace-up, combat boot-style shoes are not only comfortable but also super versatile, and can be styled with delicate floral patterns or mom jeans and a flannel shirt.

All in all, we can confirm that 90s trends were more than iconic, and as a result many 90s trends are making a reappearance. 90s fashion created incorporated a perfect mix of minimalism and elegance, and as a result will always be remembered as one of the most significant decades in terms of fashion.
